Based in Moree in regional NSW, Donna Gilmour joined Elders Insurance in 2001. But back in 1984, Donna had other plans.
"I originally wanted to be an architect. But when a friend of Dad’s offered me a short-term insurance role in Tamworth, I took it. I ended up staying for four years,” said Donna.
Needless to say, she hasn’t looked back. As a Moree local, Donna loves the interaction with her clients in the community. The feeling is mutual, as her clients like to deal with local people who are there for the long haul.
Donna elaborates, “Clients know we’re there for them 24/7 – they can call us anytime. They ask for the person they want to deal with, and walk out with a smile.”
Most of Donna’s clients operate farms. Even if they’re three hours away, Donna prefers to meet people face-to-face, armed with a loaf of fresh bread and cake from town.
“We like to visit our clients to make it easy for them. Other insurance companies aren’t that proactive – they only deal with people over the phone. That’s not us, we offer a more personal service” said Donna.
Donna’s husband and son run the family farm, while Donna and her daughter Annabelle manage the Elders Insurance Moree agency. Everyone is passionate about what they do, which has worked out well for the family.
The community of Moree is very tight. Everyone looks after each other and the drought has brought people even closer. They go out of their way to support local businesses, particularly during tough times like the drought and COVID-19.
Donna and the Elders Insurance team are active in the community and support local children’s sporting groups, the golf club and community events.
"Rugby Day is a great event. Thousands turned up to take their minds off the drought and have a laugh. It is great to be involved” Donna recalled.
Over the years, some of the claims Donna has received have also given her a laugh.
“One of my farm clients put in a claim for damage to solar panels on his roof. Apparently around ten of his cows had jumped on the roof, to get on higher ground during a flood. I have the photo to prove it!” laughed Donna.
Donna’s bubbly personality clearly stems from her all-time favourite quote:
"Don’t worry, be happy.”
With an attitude like that, Donna is bound to delight her clients for many years to come.
