The number of armed robberies taking place in Australia is on the decline, a recent study conducted by the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) shows.
However, that doesn't mean you should do away with your business insurance policy, or avoid arranging one if you haven't already.
The AIC's "National Armed Robbery Monitoring Program (NARMP)" study reveals that 12,005 people were reportedly the victims of armed robbery between 2009 and 2010.
Dr Maria Borzycki, the study's author, said this number represents a significant drop in armed robberies over the past decade or so.
In 2003, 33 people in 100,000 could ostensibly be victims of armed robberies. By 2010, this had fallen to 18 people in 100,000 - which is definitely a cause for celebration.
Nevertheless, Dr Borzycki's study highlights some areas "that warrant monitoring in coming years". The number of solely female perpetrators is on the rise, for instance, and the frequency of armed robberies in licensed premises actually increased by 20 per cent between 2004 and 2010.
This demonstrates that it's never a good idea to become complacent.
In addition to taking steps to protect your business from armed robberies, such as not keeping large amounts of cash at your premises, an insurance policy with theft cover is a great way to make sure a loss-causing event such as this doesn't spell the end of your business.
Elders Insurance offers theft cover that can protect the contents, property and stock of your business. This may include office machinery and equipment, art works, furniture and customers' goods for which you are responsible.
You can also organise business insurance with theft cover that will protect you if and when your premises are robbed without forcible entry. For more information, get in touch with your local agent today!
